Permits are a common worry, and the answer is usually simpler than people expect. It comes down to one thing: where the container will sit.
On private property: usually no permit
If the dumpster sits on your own driveway or private property, you typically do not need a permit. This covers the large majority of residential rentals. We set every container on boards to protect the surface, and you are good to go.
On a public street: often yes
If the only place for the container is a public street or right-of-way, your city or municipality may require a right-of-way or obstruction permit, sometimes with reflective markings for safety. Rules and fees vary from one community to the next across the metro.
How to check quickly
- Confirm exactly where the container will be placed — driveway or street.
- If it is the street, contact your city's public works or permitting office.
- Give yourself a few days' lead time in case a permit is required.
